On 16 June, Bob Reitemeier, our Chief Executive from 2002-11, was awarded the CBE for service to children.

Under Bob’s leadership, The Children's Society defined its vision of working on behalf of the country's most disadvantaged children and young people. This is a commitment we continue to hold strongly today.

Among other projects, Bob commissioned The Good Childhood Inquiry, resulting in the landmark report A Good Childhood: Searching for Values in a Competitive Age, in 2009. Bob is currently the Chair of the National Children and Young People’s Workforce Partnership and in 2009 was Deputy Chair of the Social Work Taskforce.

He is a former Chair of Children England (2004-08) and founding Director of the Children’s Workforce Development Council (2005-08).

Since early this year, Bob has been Chief Executive of the Essex Community Foundation. This role allows him to return to his roots, started more than 30 years ago in Africa, in grassroots and community development.
