Young Carers Enjoy Parliament To Achieve Change

18 April 2007

The Children's Society, in Partnership with YMCA Fairthorne Manor is facilitating a trip for 36 young carers to The Houses of Parliament on Wednesday 18 April 2007 at the invitation of Tim Loughton MP (Shadow Children's Minister).

The young people, two from 18 different projects across the country(1), will have the chance to ask questions of Mr Loughton in a debate and to watch the Prime Minister’s Question Time. The group of young carers all play a vital role in helping their own relatives to live a better life.

The theme of the debate is “Enjoy and Achieve”. This will be a good opportunity for the young people to discuss issues around education, leisure, respite time and the importance of their projects. The young people's views and opinions will be voiced in the debate where they will also get to meet their own local MPs, who will take away the issues raised at the debate and raise them in Parliament.

The eighth annual Young Carers Festival jointly organised by YMCA Fairthorne Manor and The Children’s Society takes place on 29 June – 1 July 2007 at YMCA Fairthorne Manor in Hampshire under the theme “Enjoy and Achieve”. Over 1,600 young carers from across the country are expected to attend the festival taking timeout from their responsibilities at home.
