Let Children Speak Out

05 March 2007

The Children's Society launches its innovative Leaves of Life initiative this Easter throughout the country from 8 April – 27 May. Leaves of Life is an exciting programme taking place over the Easter period, to help make the community a better place for children.

Following the success of last year, Leaves of Life places children's views at the heart of the community and encourages it to bring children’s views to life. Leaves of Life has been designed by The Children's Society, a group of children's work advisers and the national worship development officer for the Church of England.

Leaves of Life proved a massive success in the targeted pilot regions of the country last year, where it had a real impact on the local community. Children celebrated the value of family and importance of friendship and revealed their deep concerns like fear of crime and danger. Focusing on the Eastertide messages of 'new life'. Leaves of Life is an all-age service. It focuses on capturing thoughts and reflections and giving the congregation the opportunity to respond to them.

Bishop Tim Stevens, Bishop of Leicester and Chair of the Board of Trustees said, “Leaves of life from The Children's Society helps us to hear about issues that children see as significant. Through the activities we can support children to contribute their voices to the ongoing national debate on childhood, place children at the heart of worship and share the Easter messages of new life.”

Bob Reitemeier, Chief Executive, The Children's Society said, “Every child deserves a good childhood. In light of the recent UNICEF report on the well-being of children and young people, where the UK ranked bottom, we must ensure they have a more of a say about making their communities a better place. Leaves of Life is an ideal opportunity for children to speak out and be heard instead of just watching in silence.”

Leaves of Life is a powerful tool enabling children to reach out to the community, letting them know what would really make a change for the better for them. It’s fun and simple.

This year Leaves of Life also offers children the chance to contribute their voices and views to The Good Childhood Inquiry.
