Providing a helping hand

In the difficult economic climate of the past few years, many families have struggled to afford basic items such as toiletries and household cleaning products. So, back in July 2013, staff and volunteers from Middlesbrough Support Group in the Tees Valley had the idea of starting up the Essentials Project.

The group’s fundraising means The Children’s Society can supply essentials like soap and nappies to local families for free. The scheme is not available to the general public, but families can be referred to the project by local schools. Jane, a 22-year-old from Billingham, has benefited greatly from the project.

‘I’d like to say how grateful I am to receive these essentials for me and my daughter,’ she said. ‘It’s lovely to see there are still some people in this world we can look to for help.’ Local organisations have also been very supportive. For instance, the 9th Billingham Scout Group held a collection for the project at their Carol Service last Christmas.
