Our interview with Liz Hart

Q: I understand that you are co-organising a Bake and Brew and a knitting event for this weekend. Why did you decide on this combination?

Liz Hart: I've been involved in minor exhibitions and fundraising events before but nothing quite like this. The idea evolved very quickly. It’s a practical solution from Sewing Skills for Life, appealing for a generosity of time rather than money. A drop-in coffee morning is sociable, friendly and should be enjoyable. We hope it will become an annual event.

Q: Why did you choose to knit blankets? Will there be a unique design on each blanket?

Liz: A blanket is simply practical - warmth is a basic human need. Each blanket will be unique, not uniform at all! All the blankets will be handmade from squares that have been donated, or made on the day by generous individuals.

Q: For how long have you raised funds for The Children’s Society?

Liz: Apart from Christingles and the collection box for your old coppers change, this is the first time.

Q: Why did you decide to raise funds to support our work?

Liz: Karen (one of the event's co-organisers), the originator of Sewing Skills for Life has also designed a unique baby and toddler car seat/pushchair accessory called the Wrap and Go. I think she is focused on keeping everyone warm! Karen had agreed to donate some Wrap and Gos to The Children's Society.

My friend Trish Willetts, who stocks the Wrap and Go in her shop, is a loyal supporter of yours. The initial idea for knitting for a bit was hatched from a conversation about your work in the Midlands when we met Roseann Boyce, one of your fundraisers, at a business network meeting.

Q: This sounds like a great event. Is there anything that we haven't spoken about that is important to mention?

Liz: Not sure if this is important as such but this event has already shown us just how generous and kind strangers can be, people want to get involved. Although time it is precious, asking for time rather than money seems to have worked really well. We have already received lots of squares and a donation of completed blankets from the knit for peace charity. All this has been achieved in very little time too, I think our first official meeting together was beginning of November! Just goes to show what can sometimes be achieved from a simple idea.
