Ian Sparks, our Chief Executive from 1986-2002, died peacefully at his home last week following a short illness. He was 71 years old.
Matthew Reed, our Chief Executive, said: 'Ian was a man of great vision, faith and principle who deeply believed in social justice and the ability of our organisation to make a lasting difference to disadvantaged children's lives. All of us at The Children’s Society are deeply saddened to hear about his death and our thoughts and prayers are with his family.'
Ian was our youngest ever Chief Executive and oversaw a period of great change at our charity. Ian Sparks was awarded an OBE in 1999 in the Queen’s birthday honours list in recognition of his work at our charity.
Under his leadership we completed our transformation from an organisation that provided residential childcare to one that champions social justice, influences public policy, and provides direct support to vulnerable children and families. His influence on our work is evident today.
An obituary for Ian will follow.
