The Good Childhood Inquiry puts the spotlight on lifestyle

26 February 2008

This week you might have seen The Children’s Society on television or in the newspapers. That’s because we released some information that we have been working on about what young people like you and adults think about ‘lifestyle’.

What’s ‘lifestyle’?

Lifestyle means what you spend your money on and what you do in your spare time. This might include what you eat, what you like to do after school or on weekends or what clothes you wear.

This is part of a big piece of work that The Children’s Society is working on called The Good Childhood® Inquiry

Things that might interest you:

What did adults say?

  • 61% of adults think that the Government should ban the advertising of bad food to young people.
  • 90% of adults thought that advertising to children at Christmas time makes parents spend more money than they can afford.
  • 89% of adults think that children and young people worry too much about having things like the latest gadget or fashion item.

What did young people say?

  • You told us that you do feel under pressure to have the latest and coolest trends. This could be a pair of trainers or a video game.

If you’d like to find out more about The Good Childhood Inquiry, we have a dedicated microsite called My Life which you can visit.
