Glossary

Here’s a glossary to help you with words that you might not be sure of.

Advocacy (or independent advocate) It's really important for children and young people with disabilities to have someone who will listen to what they want and speak out for them - this is called an independent advocate. An independent advocate helps a young person with disabilities to express their thoughts and opinions so that they can have control over their lives.

Askability is a website made using symbols to help children and young people with disabilities to understand local news stories and what’s going on where they live.

Discrimination is when a person is treated badly because they are seen as ‘different’. Differences can be anything like the colour of your skin, what clothes you wear or your religious beliefs.

Hundreds and Thousands of Childhood Memories is The Children’s Society’s campaign to collect the country's favourite childhood memories. We are asking adults to submit their favourite childhood memory so that we can understand what makes for a good childhood for kids like you in the UK today.

Mentoring: Sometimes kids feel like they don’t have anyone they can talk to about problems they're facing. This is when mentoring can help. A mentor is an adult who will listen to the young person and help them with their problems. If you’d like to find out about The Children’s Society’s mentoring programme please visit our mentoring pages.

My Life is a website dedicated to children and young people about The Good Childhood Inquiry

My Life 4 Schools is a website designed as a free resource for 7-eleven year olds. It can help with dealing with peer pressure, problem solving and getting on better with other kids and adults.

Participation is to take part in something. At The Children's Society we try very hard to offer children and young people the opportunity to be involved in the work that we do. We listen to children and young people’s ideas and we use them in lots of areas of our work.

Prejudice means making a decision about something or someone before knowing all the facts. For example an individual might not like someone just because of the colour of their skin or their religious beliefs. They don't know the person but they don't like them because they think they're 'different'.

Project: We work all over the country, in many different towns and cities, helping kids and teenagers and their families with their problems. Each office is called a 'project' because they help with different things.

The Good Childhood Inquiry
is a study The Children’s Society is working on to find out what makes a good childhood. We've collected lots of thoughts and ideas from kids, teenagers and adults so that we know what makes for a good life for children and young people in the UK.

Walk and Explore is a fun summer sponsored walking event that you and your family and friends could take part in.

Young carer is a young person who looks after their Mum, Dad or guardian. They do this because their parent isn’t well. This means that they have to help more around the house with jobs like cooking and cleaning and often miss out on things that other children get to do like playing with their friends.
