Ideas for schools

To strengthen relationships with children in the community, we have created a special schools module for Leaves of Life. Within it are resources for collective worship and class work that can be adapted for use in multi-faith schools. They may also provide links to PSHE, SMSCD and the outcomes of the Government's Every Child Matters programme of positive change for children.

Leaves of Life does not represent a great time commitment for teaching staff. It provides you with exciting new resources that place children's voices at the very heart of the community and sow seeds for future generations. By encouraging children to express the positives of their lives and communities and the things they'd like to see change in their neighbourhoods, you'll get a valuable insight into their lives. This information can be used to highlight and tackle issues within the school such as bullying or discuss outside of school concerns, such as personal safety, with the local police and other relevant groups.

Collective worship

Activities: introducing the prayer leaves, explaining what they are about and how to use them, as well as team games, songs and stories focusing on what makes each of us 'special'.
Learning for children: to value difference and individuality but at the same time seeing the benefits of working together.

In the classroom

Activities: class discussions on what makes people 'special', what they like about their community and what would make it better; creating their own individual prayer leaves and a 'Tree of Life' to hang them on (if the event is being held in school).
Learning for children: to express their hopes and fears verbally. Developing their creativity using the prayer leaves and in making the 'Tree of Life'; acknowledging the different responses to the questions asked and to creating the leaves.
