Understanding Children's Well-being is part of an ongoing research programme which aims to understand what impacts on young people’s well-being and will also monitor changes in well-being over time. This report provides a short introduction to some of the main topics covered by the survey and will be followed by a series of more detailed reports over the next year. These will include:

  • An analysis of the concept of psychological well-being and its relationship to subjective well-being
  • Further exploration of family factors and well-being
  • Other areas such as young people’s experiences of their local area

We will also begin the second wave of the survey in 2010 which will be the next step in beginning to identify trends in young people’s well-being in England over time. This is part of the next stage of the programme which will also develop some key areas identified from the first report such as:

  • Exploring the links between personality, life events and well-being
  • Developing a better understanding of well-being and diversity
  • Examining more fully the links between poverty and well-being
