Young people from the Thanet project posed for The Children's Society

Thanet Participation project is in the local authority district in East Kent, encompassing Margate, Broadstairs, Ramsgate, Westgate, Birchington and five villages. We concentrate on participation work with young people in trouble with the law or at risk of engaging in anti-social or criminal behaviour through the Diary Award scheme.
The scheme is an effective intervention method in working with these children and young people and demonstrates the contribution they can make to their communities.

It works by being a grant-giving scheme that allows children and young people to design their own activity or project with the support of a diary award worker. Applications are appraised by a panel of children and young people against the funders’ criteria and the Children’s Society’s Pioneer framework. The children and young people recommend which groups are to be funded and any conditions they would like to see met – such as ensuring equality in access to the project.

The scheme is recognised for it’s track-record of delivery and best practice and empowers children and young people in trouble with the law or at risk of engaging in anti-social or criminal behaviour, enabling them to develop a range of skills. Their needs and wishes are at the centre of all project activity.
