The Shared Care Project in Solihull has provided a service to disabled children and young people and their families for more than 20 years, in partnership with Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council. Over those years the service has evolved from a solely residential provision aimed at meeting family need, to a child-focused, rights-led partnership with the young people who use the service.

The project has become a resource centre where it works towards empowering and enabling young people to “speak up, speak out” about the issues that affect them. It includes the most profoundly disabled who use different methods of communication.

At this project, disabled young people control their environment to make it what they want it to be, so they can be creative in expressing their views, communicating in their way to get their message across.
