The Portage and Early Support Service supports young disabled children up to the age of five and their families in a way that maximizes their quality of life and helps every child to achieve his or her potential. Both paid staff and volunteers visit children in their own homes and use the Portage method to help parents teach their children early development skills in a way that is enjoyable for the whole family, using a step-by-step approach to learning.
We use a range of toys, books, stories and song to engage children in activities that will help them reach long-term goals. Creativity is at the heart of the Portage approach and home visitors quickly become experts at picking up children’s likes and dislikes and tailoring their programme around this. We have an extensive toy library for the use of staff, volunteers and families.
We work in close partnership with parents and professionals such as speech therapists and health visitors. Because young disabled children nearly always live with their parents and it is parents who exert most influence on the lives of their children, we work to support disabled children by supporting their parents and by influencing professionals who provide services to disabled children and their families.
