Embrace supports young refugees and new migrants in South Yorkshire aged five to 19 and their families.
Our staff are trained to support young people on a range of issues, from legal advice to housing to education. They meet with the young people on a one-to-one basis to help with the issues they present. These are often around access to services, including education and health but can be on a number of other issues from local orientation to loneliness.
Embrace also runs social and educational activities and groups. In the past, these have supported teenage girls, who are often parents, primary school children with mental health issues, and male teenagers with issues around British culture, drugs and sex. The social activities that Embrace delivers are concentrated around the school holidays. This is to help combat isolation and build up the young people’s confidence and resilience.
We also work with the local community and schools, to promote more tolerance and understanding. We raise awareness, campaign and lobby on refugee issues. Our aim is to ensure that young refugees and new migrants will be treated as children first and foremost, rather than as asylum-seekers. As such, we campaign for them to be protected by the laws and practices that safeguard and promote the welfare of children.
