The Children’s Society in Oldham was established in 1987-88 to serve the local community of a medium-sized estate on the outskirts of town. It is in an area with a well-defined identity despite its high unemployment and low income.

In recent years the focus of our work has centred around the pioneer programme Children in Trouble with the Law and currently provides preventative work with young people aged 10-17 who live in the South Alexandra and Alt areas of Oldham (Youth Inclusion Project). We also provide a children’s counselling service for children aged five to13, who have been adversely affected by incidents of domestic violence.

  • The Youth Inclusion Project aims to tackle the primary risk factors associated with offending, anti-social behaviour and fear of crime at an individual, group and community level. Support is offered on both an individual and group basis, and young people are encouraged to develop new skills and interests and to maintain existing ones.
  • The children’s counselling service is a borough-wide service providing free and confidential individual one-to-one counselling to children, aged five to13 who have been adversely affected by incidents of domestic violence. There is a high demand for the service, which unfortunately means it has to operate a waiting list
