Support Plus Volunteering Scheme
What is the Support Plus Project?
This project aims to reduce the isolation felt by many disabled young people aged 14–24 living in Middlesbrough and Stockton. We will do this by providing links between the young people and trained volunteers. Working to a personal plan developed with the young person, the volunteers will give the young people the opportunity to access activities, develop their independence, raise their aspirations and foster greater decision making in their lives and in their communities.
Who can volunteer?
Anyone over the age of 16 can apply to be a volunteer. You may already have skills that you can bring to the volunteering role or you may wish to learn new skills. All you need is some spare time and a desire to help disabled young people live a more independent and fulfilled life. The minimum commitment to the Support Plus Project is 12 hours for induction and training which is delivered over two sessions, or can be spread over six weeks, followed by one visit to your matched young person every two weeks. A visit can last from one hour up to three hours.
What do I get out of volunteering?
- All volunteers who join the Support Plus Volunteer Project receive training. The training package will give you a head start if you want to work in social care or education.
- You will have the opportunity to work directly with a disabled young person, to get to know them, help them to learn new skills and be a part of mainstream life.
- You will have the chance to meet and socialise with other volunteers and disabled young people.
- In some cases we may be able to have your volunteer work accredited. We can also work with you if volunteering is part of your current course.
- You will have the satisfaction of knowing that giving your time really has made a difference.
- You will receive individual support from a team of professionals.
- And you will be appreciated and valued for the commitment you have made.
Frequently asked questions

No, if you are in receipt of any benefits becoming a Support Plus volunteer will not affect these.
What days and times will I be required
to volunteer?
Support Plus is a flexible project. You tell us the days and times you would like to volunteer and we’ll do our best to match you to a young person who is happy to receive their support at these times.
Do I have to do the training?
Yes, the induction and initial training must be completed before you can start work as a volunteer.

No, you will be able to claim your travel expenses to and from training and volunteer activities. In addition there is an allowance to cover the cost of travel, admission, and refreshment for the young person and their volunteer.
Will I have to go through any security checks?
Yes, because the role is about working with young people you will need to provide us with the names of two referees who know you well and can vouch for you. In addition you will
also have to undergo an advanced check with the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB Check).
