The Voices project was started in June 2002 with funding from Newcastle Children’s Fund. Voices is a participation project based in Newcastle upon Tyne and works with children and young people to help them explore issues that are important to them.

We believe that every child and young person living in Newcastle (and throughout the UK) has a right to be involved in decisions that affect their lives, directly or indirectly, regardless of age, sex, gender, ability, culture, religion or sexual orientation. Our work involves:

  • Developing methods and tools to enable children and young people to participate
  • Developing training for adults, including staff, volunteers and children and young people to raise awareness of children’s rights and equip them with the skills required for participation
  • Working with service providers, statutory and voluntary organisations to involve children and young people in service development, delivery and evaluation.
  • Taking a strategic approach to involving children and young people in decision making on a city wide and national level.
  • Believing that participation is about social change. It is not just about models, structures and methods but is about values, attitudes and professional approach.
