The Participation, Advocacy & Rights Project (West Sussex) is a partnership between the Children’s Society and West Sussex Children and Young People’s Support Service. It provides an advocacy and rights service, an independent visitor scheme and a participation service. These services are available to all children and young people in the care of West Sussex County Council, and also those receiving a leaving care service.

We are a children’s rights project committed to the implementation of the UN charter on the rights of the child [linkd - www.unhchr.ch/html/menu3/b/25.htm]. We promote children’s rights, assist children and young people to understand their rights and ensure they are listened to. We enable children and young people to get their views heard and be involved in decisions and processes that affect them.

In line with the Children’s Society’s priority areas we place particular emphasis on supporting children in care with disabilities and those in trouble with the law.

Our commitment to children and young people’s rights leads us to involve children and young people in all areas of our practice development. We endeavour to promote this underlying principle and so influence practice within the Local Authority and the Children’s Society.
