The Children’s Society has been active in Thanet for more than 25 years. Thanet Participation project concentrates on participation work with young people in trouble with the law or at risk of engaging in anti-social or criminal behaviour through the Diary Award scheme, which has been the focus of our work since 2001
The scheme is an effective intervention method in working with young people aged 11-18 and demonstrates the contribution these young people can make to their communities. It works by being a grant-giving scheme that allows them to apply for funding for their own project.
Our youth and outreach support workers provide as much support as each group needs to successfully cost and design their project, write their application form and deliver and evaluate their project. We welcome self and community/mainstream referrals and provide a range of information and advice.
We help 300 children and young people a year to gain an understanding of the communities they live in and the issues they wish to address. This method respects their views and allows imagination and innovation to thrive, motivating them in a way that some approaches don’t by developing skills, interests, personal and social development and citizenship skills.
The scheme is being developed so that children and young people can gain accreditation for their work through the Youth Achievement Awards.
