Young people taking part in a workshop at Safe in the City Manchester posed for The Children's Society

Safe In The City works within a child-centred model that assesses and identifies the needs, wishes and feelings of the young people who are referred to the service.

We work in Manchester and Salford, and reflect the diversity of the region in our work by providing services to a range of young people:

· Under 18 year olds in running away who are referred through our Missing From Home Scheme, or who approach us directly
· Black and Asian young people in Manchester running away or at risk
· Unaccompanied and asylum seeking young people experiencing crisis and trauma that puts them at risk
· Children and young people who are sexually exploited

We also have a parenting worker who offers support to parents whose teenage children have run away from home. This can take the form of group attendance or one-to-one sessions.

The project is staffed by a team of multi-disciplinary workers drawn from a range of professional backgrounds, including social work and youth work. Our approach to confidentiality and child protection is designed to give young people some control over who hears their stories and is ratified by the local safeguarding children board. Our sexual exploitation worker is located in the multi-agency team called PROTECT, based at Grey Mare Lane police station.
