The Post Adoption and Care: Counselling, and Research Project is based in south London. It was started in 1993 to provide counselling, information, advice and intermediary services for people who were either adopted through, or were in the care of, the Children’ Society.

At this project, we hold about 130,000 record cards The project receives up to 100 enquiries each month from people all over the UK and abroad. Most people who contact the project want information about their backgrounds and many go on to search in the hope of re-establishing contact with birth family members.

The project’s work has been innovative and ground-breaking. During its early years much of the work was centred on developing good practice and policy guidelines. Many of our findings have been published in professional journals, thus successfully disseminating information.

The services we offer for adopted people and their relatives are now relatively well established and we continue to be seen as leaders in the field. Post Adoption and Care is an approved adoption agency and is regulated by Ofsted.
