What do we do?

The Portage model was named after the town Portage in Wisconsin where it was first developed. Portage is an early intervention method for families who have a pre-school child with learning difficulties. The child may have a delay in their development or a more serious disability. A trained volunteer or staff member visits the family at home once a week. Together, they plan a simple but structured teaching programme, taking into account the child’s strengths and preferences. The activities are always play-based, and help the child to learn new skills in easy steps.
