Young people from the OASIS project showing off their masks posed for The Children's Society

The OASIS project provides educational support in its widest sense for young refugees aged 11-19 in three secondary schools in Oxford. This is delivered by project workers and a team of about 25 community volunteers who support young refugees in lessons and homework clubs or offer one-to-one literacy help.

The project provides a comprehensive support service for all refugee children to help them overcome the many difficulties that can prevent them achieving their full educational potential. Typical problems include housing; money issues (benefits and budgeting); health concerns; coping with every day life on their own; immigration status concerns; loneliness and friendship problems; and bullying and racist abuse. The project liaises closely with schools, families, social services and a wide range of other agencies, with the aim of helping a young person to help themselves, thereby developing their coping capacity.

Direct support in lessons is provided for some young people, especially those most recently arrived. We concentrate on helping young people learn subject-specific words rather than everyday transactional vocabulary. The project also runs three homework clubs a week to reinforce this support.

Referrals to the project are through our linked secondary schools but any school in Oxfordshire can request information or advice.
