The LEAP project is based in Leeds and operates across the city from its office on Stanningley Road, in Bramley. LEAP, which stands for Listening, Empowering, Advocacy and Participation, works to promote the inclusion of disabled children as well as refugee and asylum seeking young people, particularly in education and within the community.
We work in partnership with many local agencies and are supported by Connexions, Leading Edge Big Lottery Funding, the Transformation Fund, Leeds Children’s Fund, Early Years and the Youth Service Joint Partnership Prevention Pilot Project, and Leeds Early Years funding. Our multi-agency partnerships enable social and educational opportunities in nine schools.
The project aims to identify ways of meeting the needs of children and young people by engaging with them and listening to them to provide services that support and empower them.
Our staff work with refugee and asylum seeking young people to overcome barriers so they can reach their full potential and we have contributed to the Children’s Society Good Childhood Inquiry [link] by including concerns from young people coming to this country as unaccompanied asylum seekers.
We also continue to develop our disability work, delivering the My Charter of Expectations training programme – which informs on what the children expect from adults who provide services for them – and our disability awareness training in schools. Our free disability and diversity training is delivered to childcare providers - childminders and early years workers in the private, independent and voluntary sectors.
