The Harbour project is a school-based mental health service for young refugees and asylum seekers in Oxford. Consultation with schools is at the heart of our approach and we operate in partnership with one primary school and two secondary schools.
Our staff work therapeutically with children and young people who face emotional or psychological distress, disturbance or trauma as a result of their refugee experience.
The team is multi-disciplinary, so we are able to work in a variety of modalities including talking, using the arts and practical solution-focused work. We tailor our approach to the needs of each young person and work with them on an individual, family or group basis depending on what is appropriate. We use interpreters as necessary.
Each year we facilitate a psycho-social group for about 12 unaccompanied young people, providing an environment in which the young people can work on psychological, educational and social issues, thus reducing their sense of isolation and loneliness.
The needs of young refugees referred to us are often complex and we work closely with a range of local agencies, including social services, solicitors, CAMHS (Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services) and refugee organisations.
The work of the team is clinically supervised by a child and adolescent psychiatrist.
