Based in offices in Northwich, the Cheshire Youth Inclusion Project works with young people from Vale Royal aged 13–16 years who have been identified by agencies such as the police, children’s services and community safety wardens as being at risk of offending. Many are part of the youth justice system or perpetuating anti-social behaviour. Participation in the project is voluntary and young people and their parents or carers must consent to a referral.
Once accepted onto the project, the young person is allocated an individual project worker who makes an assessment of their circumstances using ONSET (A Youth Justice Board assessment tool) and works with the young person on an agreed intervention plan.
In addition to individual work, we offer issue-based group work where young people are encouraged to explore issues such as drug and alcohol use, safe sex and relationships, bullying and the consequences of behaviour. We also offer a drop-in, which provide a safe space for young people to use when they are bored, or at times of stress, and structured leisure activities designed to challenge and expand the young person’s horizons and increase self-esteem.
To complement our work with these young people, we also work with their parents and carers on issues such as setting boundaries and understanding and communicating with teenagers.
