SCARPA has been established to provide an intensive support service for young people who are experiencing, or are at risk of, running away, sexual exploitation or trafficking.
The service has an independent base in the Brunswick Methodist Church in Newcastle city centre.
The target age is 11-18 and referrals are taken by mainstream services that are well placed to identify this group of young people. They range from police sharing information on children reported missing to young people themselves either accessing the project or contacting via outreach.
SCARPA project workers work within the emerging Common Assessment Framework to ensure the best possible use of resources and integrated working. Targeted support gives young people the opportunity to make positive lifestyle changes.
The service provides a full range of information and is experienced at referring young people on to the most appropriate support.
The role of the worker in providing for the young person a ‘trusted adult’, is not just one of supporting the young person to identify the underlying causes of primary indicators, but also to support the process of co-ordination and access to services.
