Ann Tolaini, Programme Manager, Right Track, and Lynn Perry, Assistant Director, Northern Region were awarded MBEs in the Queens Birthday Honours List in recognition of their 'services to Youth Justice'.
Ann Tolaini, Programme Manager, Right Track
Ann Tolaini helped set up Right Track, one of our leading Youth Justice projects, in Bristol 10 years ago. Right Track was developed when it became apparent from national statistics and The Children's Society's community project work that there were many Black and minority ethnic (BME) children who were not being treated fairly in the criminal justice system.
The project has grown from a staff of four to 10 and works with approximately 100 BME children and young people a year aged 10 to 17. Many of them come from lone parent families in the inner city, suffer social exclusion and are subjected to overt and covert racism.
Ann says: 'Our work is largely about finding solutions to the issues the young people bring. We work with the 'whole' child to assist them to improve their behaviour in all areas of their lives. We are effective because we work in the community for the community. We don't impose solutions. We work alongside children and young people and listen to their needs. By developing trusting relationships with the young person and their families/carers we can assist them to make positive changes in their lives. We work with them over a long period of time and we never give up on them.'
Lynn Perry, Assistant Director, Northern Region
Lynn Perry joined The Children's Society as a project worker seven years ago. She has also recently been involved in the establishment of a pilot programme of constructive association activities being delivered by The Children's Society and IMPACT in Thorn Cross Young Offenders Institution.
Lynn believes that The Children's Society offers an exceptional package of services: 'The organisation is able to work within statutory and performance target frameworks, bringing expertise in participation, engagement and programme delivery. We develop services that are relevant and responsive to local needs. Most importantly we have proven evidence that our services improve outcomes for children, young people and communities.'
